Lesson 3 – Part 1

The Amiga Snare

In this lesson you will learn how apply the tight effector to make a snare sound.

The Tight Effector

You are going to learn a new effector and it’s called the Tight Effector.

It looks like this…

Tight Effector

When the Tight Effector is used, it means that the proceeding lip or tongue sounds are made with tightened muscles.

For example, if you make an English “b” sound then the lip muscles are untightened, and if you make an English “p” sound then the lip muscles are tightened. In the same way, if you make an English “t” sound then the tongue muscles are untightened, and if you make an English “d” sound then the tongue muscles are tightened.

In this video the beatboxer makes two tightened sounds, a bilabial plosive (p) sound and an alveolar plosive (d) sound.

What is a Snare Drum?

A snare drum is a floor-standing drum with a top skin and a bottom skin. The bottom skin has wires underneath it that rattle when the top skin is hit with a drum stick making a sharp noise.

There are many different snare drum sounds that beatboxers make and the most realistic ones sound like they have a combination of the stick hitting the drum and the rattle from the wires.

This is the symbol used for a snare drum on BZZKTT.

The P Snare

The P Snare is the basis for lots of other snare sounds and it is a tight bilabial plosive. It looks like this:

The Amiga Snare

To make the Amiga Snare we now add a Forced Effector.
